Commons:Geograph Britain and Ireland/Reverse geocoding

Reverse geocoding is used for Geograph images being uploaded to Commons. Reverse geocoding is finding a named location based on coordinates. Different sources have been used in the past. We currently use http://edwardbetts.com/geocode/ . This tool will provide a Wikidata item to be used in location of creation (P1071) (structured data) and a category to place the image in. The tool combines OpenStreetMap and Wikidata. Results can be improved by editing these two sites. This page provides an overview per region

Adding a Wikidata tag to places informs the tool what item to use

Wikidata

On Wikidata items should have OpenStreetMap relation ID (P402) if that is available on OpenStreetMap. Every item about a location should have Commons category (P373) so the tool knows what category to use. Quite often we have slightly overlapping items on Wikidata (for example about the village and the parish with the same name) and one category on Commons. Just add the Commons category (P373) to both items.

Every item about a location should also have located in the administrative territorial entity (P131).

The regions covered by Geograph Britain and Ireland all link to OpenStreetMap:

United Kingdom

The different parts of the UK are all link to OpenStreetMap:

• England (Q21) - 58447
• Wales (Q25) - 58437
• Scotland (Q22) - 58446
• Northern Ireland (Q26) - 156393

England

England has four layers of subdivisions from large to small:

• region of England (Q48091)  Done
• county of England (Q171809)  Done
• district of England (Q349084)  Done
• civil parish (Q1115575)  Done

Most images will end up at the parish level. See OSM missing report for England for what items need attention.

Region of England

region of England (Q48091) is complete. All 9 regions have the OSM and Commons category link: query.

County of England

county of England (Q171809) is not very straightforward. Different types exist:

• historic county of England (Q1138494) Overview with current counties
• ceremonial county of England (Q180673): Overview.
• metropolitan or non-metropolitan county of England (Q643815) ( non-metropolitan county (Q769603) & metropolitan county (Q769628) ): Overview. Almost complete, needs attention.
  • unitary authority area in England (Q1136601) is a subset of these: Overview.

For example Leicestershire (Q23106) (OSM 78309) is a ceremonial county with the non-metropolitan county Leicestershire (Q21272890) (OSM 189890) and Leicester (Q83065)/City of Leicester (Q21683242) (OSM 162353) in it.

District of England

district of England (Q349084) (including non-metropolitan district (Q1187580) which includes unitary authority area in England (Q1136601)): Overview. Needs attention, plenty of missing Commons category (P373) and OpenStreetMap relation ID (P402)

Civil parish of England

civil parish (Q1115575): Overview of all of them and as a map.

Wales

Wales has two layers of subdivisions from large to small:

• principal area of Wales (Q15979307): Overview  Done
• community (Q2630741): Overview, all these items link to Commons. OSM relations are being created now. About 700 out of 900 items link to OSM now.

100% of Wales is covered by these areas

Scotland

Scotland has just one layer of subdivisions:

• Scottish council area (Q15060255) Overview  Done

There are also:

• Scottish civil parish (Q5124673), which are not subdivisions of the council areas. Overview. Some missing categories need to be created here. Parishes need to be imported to OpenStreetMap, but in the meantime are matched based on the parish code.

They can be divided as:

• part of civil parish in a Scottish council area (Q78366914)

Northern Ireland

There is one layer of adaministrative subdivisions:

• administrative territorial entity of Northern Ireland (Q17364572)

However, Commons and Wikipedia categorisation is based upon the following:

• county of Northern Ireland (Q1317848) Overview  Done
• civil parish in Ireland (Q3910694) (used for the whole Island)
• Townlands - no wikidata entry for Northern Ireland

These form a hierarchy.

Ireland

• county of Ireland (Q179872) -  Done Overview
  • local government in the Republic of Ireland (Q3074936) fills the holes.
• municipal district of Ireland (Q6664352)
• district electoral division (Q2500304)

There are some complications (eg Co Dublin has been split in 4 units, Cork is split from Co Cork).

The following are more useful than Q2500304 and better reflects existing usage on Commons/Wikipedia:

• townland (Q2151232)

Isle of Man

There is two layers of subdivisions in the Isle of Man:
