  •  Oppose I'm a bit torn on this one. It's an important historical document, but the image itself is... terrible. No clear subject, people facing away from the camera, bad composition in general... On the whole, I think I'm coming down on the side of oppose, because the image doesn't seem to be depicting anything in particular, and I don't think all images should be FPs just because they were taken by an historical figure.--Peulle (talk) 10:32, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It'a panoramic photo (and a simple Kodak Brownie capable of doing that is already great), it's from one century ago, it describes an important battleship in the middle of the WWI and immediately before the most important military operation the Russian Empire has ever done, it has an interesting composition that makes it really spontaneous, historically (and not only) interesting.
I realise that the "Historical" section of FP is dominated by the "american point of view" (many of the photos describes american history in much detail, whereas important european events aren't mentioned at all), but we absolutely need to expand the horizons and include all the great photos EVEN from Europe.
I thaught that this is a good start, even because it undermines some old stereotype.
It's sad that a norwegian like you (I'm both italian and swedish) continues to indirectly approve this point of view... European history has quite completely been cut off.
From now on, however, I will try to introduce new FP candidates that remarks european history (and sometimes even the american one, because americans seem to be a little bit ignorant of their own national history). LucaLindholm (talk) 16:44, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • This isn't about an "American point of view"! Haven't you noticed how many of the regulars here are from Germany, Austria, Spain, etc.? My problem with this photo is that it's in bad condition, and I think it would need to be digitally restored before I'd consider supporting it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:01, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi LucaLindholm, Swede here. I agree with what Ikan said above. You might not know this, but about half (maybe more) of the FPC users are from Europe, the rest are spread out all over the globe. But nationalities don't matters when we vote on photos here, we go for the best photos and not the country. One reason that American photos of historical events are so many, is that their museums and institutions are really good at digitizing their old photos and making them available online under free licenses. So with that treasure to dig from, it's no wonder they show up here. Other countries (like Sweden) are only beginning to make old photos digital and getting them online , but scanning techniques and licenses often make the work of finding really good photos for FPC a bit hard. God knows I've tried to find photos from our museums, but they suffer from the same bad scans as many others do. And even if the photo is old, it usually needs restoration, be of good original quality and composition to begin with. Like all the Nadar (French) and Julia Margaret Cameron (Brit) photos we have of people. I like your initiative to nominate photos from not so represented places, but FPC will judge them as any other photos and we are a picky bunch. ;-) --Cart (talk) 19:55, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ikan Kekek: For restoring requirement I'm completely with you. At the beginning (until some week ago) I was uploading historical photos without changing nothing of them because I thaught in Commons was important to preserve the orginals and, then, create a bettered version. In the recent times I started to do some basic improvement with Windows Photo (removing the "yellowish" atmosphere, imrpoving a little bit the contrast, etc.), if you have better software for doing this, I would be pleased to know.
@W.carter: Interesting that most of us are European, but this makes the "Historical" FP subpage in that way arranged (with the U.S. history narrated in such high details)...

    So, how do we proceed?
Do you want me to edit the file in some way and how and by which means? LucaLindholm (talk) 04:34, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • LucaLindholm, I couldn't tell you the technicalities of how to proceed, but Chris Woodrich is an expert on digital restoration, so you should talk to him. As far as keeping the original scans: yes, you should. Earlier versions of a file will remain visible if you edit it, or you could choose to use a different filename with "restored" in it. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:47, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Adam Cuerden has a great breakdown of the means of finding free images, as well as discussion of restoration, at the English Wikipedia's Signpost. He makes specific reference to GIMP, which is good to test your interest in restoration with as it is free. Looking very briefly at this image, it looks like it would be a relatively simple restoration job... there's a corner where the photograph wasn't quite flush when being scanned which will need to be cloned in or cropped out, as well as some dust and damage, mostly in areas with little detail such as the sky. If digital restoration interests you, there are much worse first images.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 12:25, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
