Clouds reflected in a bay with jellyfish infestation at Rågårdsdal
Clouds reflected in a bay with jellyfish infestation in Åbyfjorden at Rågårdsdal, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden. Most of the jellies are moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) and lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata). When these gatherings occur, the lion's manes go into a bit of a feeding frenzy capturing and eating moon jellies. The bigger lion's manes will capture smaller moon jellies with their tentacles and drag them up into their mouths. Smaller lion's manes will attach themselves to a moon jelly and eat. They seem to prefer eating the moon jellies from the underside. Some of the moon jellies in this photo are tattered and flaccid after having been partially eaten by lion's manes, others have circular marks from the lion's manes feeding.
