Batch upload Modern Egypt[edit]

The Modern Egypt digital archive is a new archive of more than 24,000 images, 12506 documents, 11,000 newspapers, 1,000 cover images and 1,500 sound and video files. It documents the history of Egypt and provides illustrations and references to the history of Egypt and the middle east. Uploading these images to commons would make them easier accessible, because the website is really difficult to navigate.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 18:51, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Upload and fetching[edit]

Downloading the entire collection is very easy, as it is found here . The image descriptions are found at an Image viewer which uses session and would probably show you a problem page. You have to click on an image on the browse page and then you have an icon next to "اغلاق" which has the description of the file viewed. If u look at the source you'd find

Which means in English: (الوصف: = Description: ) (من ألبوم: = From Album:) (المصور: = Author) (المصدر: = Source) (التاريخ: = Date) (الموضوعات: = Topics) (الكلمات المفتاحية (عامة): = Keywords)

You'd also find the image's name :

 <input name="TBX_PhysicalImagePath" type="text" value="d:\website\attachments\photos\res150\558\bap_24819.jpg"

Licensing[edit]

Many images are already PD because of template:PD-Egypt-1996 which states that images before 1981 are PD.

If you read the license tag carefully, the situation is much more complicated than you think. I don't think any of us want to comb through thousands of images evaluating whether a work has "creative character" or not (quite the subjective judgment). Additionally, this tag only establishes PD in the US - you need an additional tag to show PD in Egypt, like {{PD-Egypt-author}}, per the notice in small text at the bottom. For this reason, I suggest we only include works whose authors died before 1946. Dcoetzee (talk) 21:00, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
All images found on the site are historical images with mechanical reproductions of scenes. This means they are scenes which aren't altered, but if seen in life with the eyes, they are the same.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 22:22, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
