Proposed move

[edit]

Very obvious and non-controversial reasoning, just to correct basic errors. It should be "streets on" because the Isle of Wight is an island, and it should be "streets on the Isle..." because otherwise it doesn't make sense. Arriva436talk/contribs 20:09, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely agree. I think when the upload of a lot of Geograph images started a few months ago, lots of these categories were created for counties across the UK. 'in' would work for almost all, accept the Isle of Wight where 'on the' should be used. There are a number of others such as Category:Railway bridges in the Isle of Wight which would also need changing. They appear to have all been created by a bot, which, of course wouldn't understand the island as an exception. Editor5807speak 20:56, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot about this. Yes - there are loads of "in"s that should be "on"s. The reason this one came to my attention was that I was going to get it deleted, in relation to Category:Roads on the Isle of Wight, but it turns out there is a whole category string of "Streets" throughout the country, so I decided to try and get the page moved while I was at it. All the relevant cats have been sorted now. Arriva436talk/contribs 17:54, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Moved back?

[edit]

This cat has been moved back to "Streets in the Isle of Wight" which makes absolutely no sense at all. It should definitely be "Streets on the Isle of Wight". Simon Burchell (talk) 09:00, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Simon Burchell I got a rebuke about it, see User_talk:Estopedist1#Sports_in_the_Isle_of_Wight Estopedist1 (talk) 14:29, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
All related categories are "on the Isle of Wight", which reflects common usage with regard to the Isle of Wight (note that arguments that "it is a county and other counties use in" aren't particularly relevant, because it is a county and an island). Note also that comparisons to "in the Outer Hebrides" etc. are not particularly relevant either, because they are mostly archipelagos rather than single islands. All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 14:53, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
