December 2022[edit]

@Le Petit Chat: while part of the wall is in Morocco, this category is clearly about the wall that is in Western Sahara. Stating that it's in Morocco without explanation is misleading at best. M.Bitton (talk) 21:26, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Koavf: what do you think? M.Bitton (talk) 21:28, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please see that map: .
I would like to add that the 1975-1991 war took place both in Western Sahara and Southern Morocco. From a military point of vue, Morocco had to protect the border in front of the Polisario camps in Tindouf. --Le Petit Chat (talk) 21:35, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody's contesting the fact that the wall extends into Morocco, but given how this category has been set up, stating that the wall is in Morocco without explanation is misleading. M.Bitton (talk) 21:42, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's a substantial portion in Morocco, so writing that it's a fortification in Morocco seems fair, tho I agree that it could imply to someone that Western Sahara is Moroccan, which it is not. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:46, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. So what do we do to prevent it from being misleading? I'm not all that familiar with Commons. Can we add a small explanation to the category? M.Bitton (talk) 21:49, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good question: I don't think there is a method of explicitly explaining "Yes, this is a fortification in Morocco, but it's mostly in Western Sahara" other than the description at the top. So we could have some text at the beginning after {{Wikidata Infobox}} that begins "{{en|1=explanation}}". —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:22, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@M.Bitton: @Le Petit Chat: @Koavf: in Wikidata infobox I added "...extending into Morocco and Mauritania" as description, as well as length (2,700 km as total, ~150 km in Morocco and ~10 km in Mauritania), so I believe things are more clear now. --Orijentolog (talk) 07:00, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That is a Christmas treat, хва́ла/hvála. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:31, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Koavf and Orijentolog: Thank you, but the claim that the Berm extends into Mauritania's territory is actually baseless. First, minurso, whose job is to monitor the buffer zones on both sides of the Berm, doesn't mention such a thing and nor do the the reliable sources that go into the details about the berm's construction. Second, the idea that Mauritania would tolerate such a scenario is unthinkable given that when the wall was finished, it formally complained that it was too close to its borders.
