Category talk:Jimmy Savile
Categories[edit]
I have removed Category:Pedophiles from this. Although it may seem logical to apply this label, it is also worth remembering that (a) pedophile is first and foremost a clinical psychiatric definition, and I have seen no such diagnosis of Savile, and (b) the common parlance as used by journalists and those who know no better is an inadequate basis on which to categorise individuals, dead or alive. You'll note that this category, and related ones, hasn't been applied to Category:Michael Jackson, and it might be thought that the evidence in his case is far stronger than it is for Savile. So to apply the category to Savile but not Jackson would appear to be inconsistent. In general, categories should be precise and capable of both definition and application to cases without any doubt arising. Rodhullandemu (talk) 22:59, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
- Similarly, Category:Child sexual abuse offenders doesn't apply since he has not been convicted by a court of law. Rodhullandemu (talk) 15:28, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
- The difference here is Michael Jackson was found guilty on all counts, whereas there's too much evidence against Jimmy Savile for him to be considered innocent. And none of Savile's accusers back-pedalled like Jackson's did (e.g. Wade and James testifying under oath Jackson never touched them, only to completely contradict themselves years later). They are not remotely the same. --92.30.65.41 11:37, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
