Dragons, lions and Kirins[edit]
A lot of times lion dance images are being tagged as dragon dance. A rough guide is , if there are two dancers who wear the lion costume its usually a lion, if it takes a dozen or more dancers who dance the dragon through the use of long stick its a dragon.
Because of the nature of the Chinese diaspora its usually the Southern lion that is found in the West, the Northern lion is predominatly yellowish/orangish has a lot less decoration and looks much more like a lion.
Occassionaly you will come across Kirin/Qilin dancers, the Kirin body is almost identical to the lion, but has a narrow head and horns. It won't come across in images but lion dance moves are larger and more arrogant, while the Kirin's move are more furtive and described as dog like. KTo288 (talk) 09:36, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
