Organisation[edit]

I started putting photos of particular models of cameras in an article rather than a category; this is because more than a few categories actually contain photos taken with the said camera, rather than photos of the camera (see the Ixus categories to see what I mean...) It appears that some users have been confusing the picture of a particular brand or type of camera with pictures taken by that brand or type of camera of the purpose of categorisation. When users are searching the Commons for a picture to use in an article in Wikipedia, the type of camera used to make that picture is generally of no interest whatsoever. I propose that images in Category:Cameras and its subcategories be categorised only by the type of camera it depicts, not the camera used to make the image. The file metadata, if present, will tell a user the type of camera used. More often than not, the metadata are lost anyway when an image is edited, depending on the software used. --Quicksilver@ 21:54, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't that people "have been confusing ...". Rather, the meanings of these categories has recently started changing. I agree that it is better for Category:Canon PowerShot A310, for example, to contain pictures of that camera, if anyone has any such. And gradually, the photos that were taken with that kind of camera are being moved to Category:With Canon PowerShot A310. User:dbenbenn 01:03, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
