English: The Ville d'Orléans was a manned gas balloon carrying military messages and mail during the German siege of Paris, taking off with Paul Rolier and Leon Bézier from the city late at night on Thursday 24th November 1870. The balloon lost its course in the strong winds and landed in a snowy Lifjell mountain area in Seljord, Norway the day after. The two frenchmen made their way back to France through Oslo and London over the next couple of weeks. The journey was the longest balloon flight until then and attracted great attention in its time.

Norsk bokmål: «La Ville d'Orléans» var en bemannet luftballong som ble sendt fra Paris under beleiringen av byen i den fransk-tyske krigen 1870–71. Gassballongen, som var lastet med post, ble ført med sterke vinder nordover, kom ut av kurs og landet i Norge 25. november 1870. Etter over 14 timer traff ballongen et tre ved Lifjell i Seljord der de to ballongførerne Paul Rolier (1844–1918) og Leon Bezier (1840–1897) kom seg ut, over 1200 km i luftlinje fra Paris. Ballongen og den tomme kurven fortsatte og havarerte i Krødsherad noe seinere. Den rekordlange luftferden ble en sensasjon i samtiden, og ballongskipperne fra storkrigen ble hyllet som helter i Norge. Hendelsen er blitt stående som en begivenhet i den tidlige luftfartshistorien.
