Villa d'Este, a former 16th century princely residence surrounded by a 25 acres park, is a luxury hotel in the Italian town of Cernobbio, on the shores of Lake Como. The villa was commissioned in 1575 by cardinal Tolomeo Gallio from the architect Pellegrino Tibaldi. It then became the residence of Caroline of Brunswick, estranged wife of future King George IV, who gave it the name Nuova Villa d'Este on the basis of a presumed link between that family, her own and her husband’s.
