The Latin initialism VSLM stands for votum solvit libens merito, "discharges the vow freely, as is deserved." It appears on altar bases, reliefs, plaques, statues and other items dedicated to a deity in fulfillment of a vow (votum). The subject of the verb solvit ("releases, discharges, fulfills") is the person making the dedication, whose name is usually given. An extra L in the formula stands for laetus (masculine; feminine laeta), indicating that the person not only fulfills the vow voluntarily (libens), but is "glad, happy" to do so. Variations include A for animo, "with a [willing] spirit," instead of M for merito. The formula may also appear as VS, votum solvit, without any modifiers, or with other variations.
