"These records are reconstructed drawings of original patent drawings that were destroyed in a fire at the Patent Office in December 1836. In 1837 Congress passed an act that provided for the restoration of these burned records. Reconstruction work was completed by 1847. Although patents issued before July 1, 1836, were unnumbered, arbitrary numbers were assigned to these "restored" drawings by the Patent Office."
