This series consists of born-digital photographs created by photographers of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, and digital reproductions of analog photographs taken by the same military branches and to a lesser extent the U.S. Coast Guard. Subjects in this series include military vessels, aircraft, vehicles, facilities, military officers, Department of Defense (DOD) personnel, military units, training, weapons, and various military operations and exercises. There are also some images of military posters and original artwork.

Operations covered in this series include Urgent Fury (Grenada invasion); Desert Shield and Desert Storm (Persian Gulf War); Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan); Iraqi Freedom (Iraq War); Southern Watch (no fly zone in Iraq); Restore Hope, Continue Hope and United Shield (Somalia); Just Cause (Panama invasion); Deny Flight (no fly zone in Bosnia and Herzegovina); Allied Force (NATO bombing of Yugoslavia); Joint Endeavor (NATO-led multinational peacekeeping force in Bosnia and Herzegovina); Uphold (Restore) Democracy (intervention in Haiti); Support Hope (humanitarian relief in Rwanda); and Provide Promise (humanitarian relief in Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Personalities pictured in this series include Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush; Secretaries of Defense Casper Weinberger, Donald H. Rumsfeld, Frank Carlucci, Dick Cheney, William J. Perry, William Cohen, and Robert Gates; and Commanders of U.S. Central Command Norman Schwarzkopf, Tommy Franks and John Abizaid.

In addition, this series contains photographs taken moments after hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001; photographs of former Iraq President Saddam Hussein after his capture and during his initial interview with a special tribunal; views of U.S. Army PFC Jessica Lynch aboard a USAF C-17A Globemaster III aircraft at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany after rescue by U.S. Military Special Forces from a hospital in An Nassiriya, Iraq; and views of military emergency response to Hurricane Andrew, Hurricane Marilyn, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunamis.

All of the images in this series contain embedded metadata, which in most cases includes the Visual Information Identification Number (VIRIN) number, name of the photographer, keywords and a complete caption.
