Shoulder Sleeve Insignia[edit]

Description[edit]

  • On a disc with a 1/8 inch (.32cm) yellow border, overall diameter 2 1/2 inches (6.35cm), two yellow lightning bolts throughout issuing diagonally from base to upper dexter and sinister, and dividing the disc into three sections, the outer sections red and the center section blue. On the blue section a yellow perpendicular guided missile.

Symbolism[edit]

  1. Scarlet is the traditional Artillery color.
  2. Blue denotes the sky into which antiaircraft artillery missiles are fired.
  3. The stylized gold lightning symbolizes the electronic emanations used in electronic warfare and for missile guidance.

  1. The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the Antiaircraft Artillery and Guided Missile School on 1956-08-16.
  2. Redesignated for the Antiaircraft Artillery and Guided Missile Center on 1957-04-29.
  3. It was redesignated on 1957-07-29 for the U.S. Army Air Defense Center.
  4. Redesignated for U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Center and Fort Bliss on 1967-11-25.
  5. The insignia was amended to extend authorization for wear to include personnel assigned to the U.S. Army Air Defense School on 1981-06-19.

  • A gold color metal device blazoned: Per chevron reversed and debased Azure and Gules, two electrical flashes on partition line Or, on the first a pile throughout Argent, surmounted by a shell of the second, winged of the third. Attached below the shield a gold scroll inscribed "MILITANT" in blue letters.

Symbolism[edit]

  1. The escutcheon represents the coordinated activity of the different elements of the Antiaircraft Artillery.
  2. The base of red is the Artillery color.
  3. The thunderbolts indicate the employment of electrical power.
  4. A searchlight beam pierces the night sky of blue.
  5. In the shaft of light rises a winged projectile, flying swiftly and surely to its target.
  6. The thunderbolts are power; the shaft of light, the illustration of truth through knowledge; the sky, the illimitable regions of the upper air that Antiaircraft Artillery must conquer; the winged projectile, the spirit of the School, young, rising, indomitable.

  1. The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the U.S. Army Air Defense School on 1965-05-04.
  2. On 1981-01-19 it was amended to extend authorization for wear to include personnel assigned to the U.S. Army Air Defense Center.
  3. Effective 1983-01-01 the insignia was redesignated for the U. S. Army Air Defense Artillery School.
