The Ojibwe word mishi-mikinaak meaning "big turtle" was used for an island in Northern Michigan and the French settlers adopted as the name for the region as Michillimackinac. This was shortened by the British to Mackinac and Mackinaw. The name is used for geographical features, cities, boats, fish, cloth and races.
