English: Saints Sergius and Herman of Valaam Russian Orthodox Chapel was built by Bishop Tikhon (1865 - 1925) in the 1890s over the grave of Father Herman, who was canonized as Saint Herman of Alaska in 1970, becoming the first Orthodox Christian saint to be glorified in North America. Saint Herman lived on Spruce Island in 1808-1837 as a hermit. He came to Alaska in 1794 from the Valaam Monastery, Russia, as lay monk with the so called Valaam mission to serve the Alutiiq people and helped to establish the Orthodox Church in Kodiak. Spruce Island is considered by Orthodox Christians as a holy site, where the Orthodox Church in America annually celebrates the canonization of Saint Herman.
