English: Of the five gates of Angkor Thom, the South Gate has been the most extensively restored and is the most complete. On the road from Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, it is the first point of entry to the ‘Great City’. Two rows of giants, holding seven-headed giant serpents, line the approach to the gate: 54 deities on the left, 54 demons on the right. The gate-tower itself, 23 m high, bears four faces looking in the cardinal directions.
