A sotōba (卒塔婆) is a strip of wood shaped like a gorintō laid as an offer on tombs in Japan. It is divided in five sections representing the five elements of Buddhism cosmology, and carries inscriptions in Sanskrit and Japanese. Below these follows the deceased person's posthumous name. Their name derives from the Sanskrit word stūpa, and they are considered pagodas.
