English: Silver coat in cats is an effect on another colour by the locus I gene, and not a colour by itself. Instead of having fully-coloured hairs, cats with the silver-effect only have the tips of its hairs coloured, while the roots are white-silver. The ground colour of the fur is silver-white. Silver cats will have a very “cold” and “metallic” hue, contrary to non-silver tabby. Silver is only applied to tabby patterned cats, for solid cats the proper terminology for this effect is smoke.
Nederlands: Zilver is een effect op een vachtkleur in katten door het locus I-gen, en niet een vachtkleur op zichzelf. In plaats van kleur over de gehele lengte van de vacht, hebben katten met een zilver-effect alleen kleur op de punten van het haar. Bij de haarwortel is de haar wit-zilver. De term zilver wordt alleen toegepast bij katten met een cyper (tabby) aftekening, bij effen (solid) gekleurde katten wordt smoke gebruikt.
