Shúkà are Maasai cloaks, primarily masculine-wear, and today mostly made of tartan cloth (predominantly red, but sometimes blue, purple, or yellow); when not tartan they are sometimes just striped, or occasionally of plain colour (usually red). In former times, they were made of red-painted leather rather than the cotton cloth that now dominates. The tartan patterns have been particularly prevalent since the 1960s.
