English: The sector (sometimes called a proportional compass, although this term is also used for the reduction compass) was described in Gunters book of 1623. It is a mathematical instrument which consists of two hinged rulers with engraved scales, that allow questions in trigonometry to be solved. They were always used with dividers. On the wooden sector there are brass locating pins where the divider points rest. To obtain the measure of an angle, place the dividers (transversely) on the locating pins on the Line of Chords pins, then the distance established transfer the dividers to the Line of Chords, one leg on the centre mark- the other leg will read off the angle. Gunters sector also had logarithmic scales so could be used to multiply. Edward Gunter and his Sector, 2003, C.J.Sagwin
