In the normal case is at a "Schooner" the anterior mast ("Schooner mast") shorter as the other mast(s). All masts of a "Schooner" are rigged with "fore-and-aft" sails. Additional and intermediate sails are possibly. (ships with other rigg variants see there)
Special types:
"Ketch" - mostly two-masted sailing ship at which the rear mast is shorter as the anterior
"Yawl" - mostly two-masted sailing boat with considerable shorter rear mast (Besan mast) as the anterior mast (Great mast)
The difference between a ship and a boat is object of the national legislation. In former times and contemporary also still in the most (European) countries are seen 23.0 m keel lenght as limit.
