Round chain drives are an early and simple form of chain drive, using a simple chain formed of round bar links. They are strong in tension, compared to rope or belt drives, and so may transmit a great torque, but the poor guiding of the chain and the lack of facilities for controlling its lubrication limited their speed.

They remain with some use into the present day, for filthy conditions and slow speeds, such as underwater sluice gates.
