Genre paintings of the 19th and 20th century depicting scenes from Rococo life, especially galant scenes from court life. There was hardly a real "Neo-Rococo" style in the 19th century, since painters mainly used the style of Academic Realism that prevailed in the 19th century rather than a manner that would remind of actual Rococo paintings. In Germany, the Rococo genre came up in the 1840s (with Menzel's widely-reproduced paintings of Frederick the Great) and became fashionable soon after. Specialized and commercially sucessful painters were active in the second half of the 19th century well into the 20th century, especially in Germany, France, and Spain. In the 20th century the fashion became more and more "low-brow" and ended in artistically weak and commercially cheap paintings also known as "Kaufhausbarock" (department store baroque).
