Polyculture in which a piece of land supports rice, fish such as carp, and domestic ducks simultaneously. The ancient Chinese system embodies mutualism between the species: the rice supports many species including pests such as snails and insects; the carp and ducks eat many pest species, and their excrement serves to fertilize the rice. The system thus requires few inputs and sustainably supports a diversified agroecosystem.
