English: The distinction between piston pumps and ram/plunger pumps
English: The ram pump is a form of piston pump, where a moving ram passes back and forth through a single fixed seal. When mounted vertically, they have sometimes been called plunger pumps.

They are often used for high-pressure pumping of liquids, such as water or hydraulic fluid.

Early ram pumps, replacing bucket pumps, were an important step in the development of beam engines for mine drainage. Bucket pumps worked on the upstroke, ram pumps on the downstroke - so could be more efficient, using a smaller engine for the same work, as the weight of the pump rod was now acting in the same direction.

Ram pumps are single-acting, but mechanical ones were often multi-cylinder.
