Rajim is one of the most important historical pilgrimage sites in Chhattisgarh, sometimes nicknamed as the Prayagraj of Chhattisgarh. It is situated where the Mahanadi and Pairi rivers meet (sangam). According to the local tradition, this tirtha-kshetra includes the junction of Sondur river, which joins Mahanadi some 20 kilometers away. In the past, Rajim served as a capital, was a much bigger city, and one of the stations for pilgrims traveling from central and northern India to Bhubaneswar-Puri.

Rajim is home to some of the oldest and best-preserved Hindu temples. While there are temples on both sides of the Mahanadi River, the east bank is home to the most notable and largest number of Hindu temples. These range in date from the sixth to the twelfth centuries. Nearby, at sites like the Sita Bari, excavations since 2012 have uncovered the remains of long-lost temples. Rajim is also home to several Jain and Islamic monuments from the pre-18th century period.
