The Raja Mahal is the oldest palace in Orchha. It is the first monument after the Orchha's medieval granite bridge. Started by the founder of the Bundela dynasty Rudra Pratap and completed by Madhukar Shah, the Raj Mahal illustrates the Rajput-Bundela style of Hindu palatial architecture. It is notable for elegance of spatial layout with chitrakala (paintings). The quadrangle ground floor is symmetric, as are the upper floor opulent royal quarters, raised balconies, and interlocking walkways crowned by domed pavilions and turrets. The paintings celebrate the Vaishnava Hindu legends, along with Shaiva and Shakta traditions. Other frescoes show court, hunting, festive and cultural scenes. The Raja Mahal offers the largest display of Bundela school of Indian painting, one of the chitrakala traditions that emerged after the ancient chitrakala tradition vanished around the 14th-century.
