The church of Santa Chiara in the district of Santa Croce, stands at the northeastern end of Piazzale Roma. The island on which it stood was donated in 1236 by Giovanni Badoer in order to build a monastery. The community of nuns of San Damiano (Franciscan) built a church dedicated to Santa Maria Mater Dei, rebaptised shortly after to Santa Chiara. It was destroyed by fire in 1574, but rebuilt and consecrated in 1620. After reconstruction, the church had five altars and hosted works by Antonio Vassilacchi, Palma the Younger and Giovanni Battista Lorenzetti. An altarpiece by Paolo Veneziano can now be seen at the Academy. Church and convent were closed in 1806 by Napoleon and the nuns transferred to Santa Croce. The building was later converted to a military hospital and nowadays hosts the police headquarters.
