101 Avenue A, between East 6th and 7th Streets, in the Alpahbet City area of the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, location of the Pyramid Club nightclub, which opened in 1979. The neo-Grec building, which was designed by William Jose, was constructed in 1879-80 as a tenement, with a German bar/meeting hall called Kern's Hall on the ground floor, where local labor groups held assemblies and the memorial for the dead of the General Slocum disaster was held. Around the turn of the century it became Leppig's until 1936. The space became a jazz club, the Jazzboat, in the 1960s, and was run by one of Duke Ellington's musicians. The building is located within the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District (Sources: "East Village/Lower East Side Historic District Designation Report" and Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation report)
