English: The Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) located at 220 Weybosset Street, in Downtown Providence, Rhode Island was originally the Loews State Theatre, a movie theater. It was built in 1928 and was designed by C. W. and George Rapp, the leading designers of movie palaces at the time, and is well-preserved. The building was refurbished in 1975, but by 1977 was in danger of being demolished. A consortium of state and local agencies, and local foundations and businesses rescued the building, which re-opened in October 1978. It now hosts touring Broadway shows, concerts, and large-scale live productions as a not-for-profit. (Source: Guide to Providence Architecture) The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Providence, Rhode Island in 1977 under the Loew's name.
