Description
English: Half-length portrait of Galileo originally painted in Florence, Italy, circa 1640 by Justus Sustermans. Galileo is "dressed in black, wears a white beard and is seated in a chair holding a telescope in his right hand. His left hand rests on the arm of the chair and he wears a ring with a clear stone on his fourth finger. He faces forward towards the viewer." This painting was commissioned for the Pandolfini family of Florence. It was purchased from the Marchesa Nimini on 26 April 1833 in Florance by English collector Reverend John Sanford. It traveled to England in 1837 and appeared in a 1838 Yates purchase catalogue, but did not sell. Exhibited in 1849 at the British Institution as part of Frederick Methuen's collection. Sold on 14 May 1920 from Corsham at Christie's to Art Collection Association, and eventually passed to George H. Gabb, whose collection was presented to the National Maritime Museum in 1937.[1]
