Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works was formed in July, 1899, in Pontiac, Mich. It initially was as a carriage spring and horse wagon making operation. The company developed a high wheel car in 1907, which was marketed as the Pontiac in 1908 only, when Pontiac Spring & Wagon was bought by the Motor Car Co., which then changed name to Cartercar. In 1909, Cartercar itself was bought by General Motors. The Pontiac make was revived in 1926, when GM looked for an appropriate name for the new subsidiary.
