Pietro
English: The model (28/6/1876-16/5/1951), who is called "Pietro" in Gloeden's photo number 762, ranks amongst the earliest ones (he appears in a photo in "The studio", in June 1893, p. 105, and in photo n. 352 in "The photogram", in 1894, p. 55).
His surname was Mazza, but he was better known with his family nickname, as "Pietro Caspanu" or Caspano. He was born on June 28 1876 from a family of fishermen and since his adolescence he worked as Gloeden's waiter, cooking meals for him.
He was photographed, in roughly 150 different takes, from childhood into adulthood, when he regularly sported a moustache.
Pietro was even brought to Naples to visit Gloeden's cousin Wilhelm von Plueschow at least once, and here he was posed with Neapolitan models.
He appears in a batch of photos printed in 1899, and photos of him were added to the catalogue at least until number 1341, then he disappeared, most likely as he married (he fathered two daughters, his descendants still live in Taormina).
He ranks amongst the two or three most pictured models of Gloeden's.
