Fire barriers are integral parts of a fire protection plan for a building or ship or structure. If holes are made, the fire-resistance rating becomes ZERO because the barrier cannot hold back fire, smoke or heat anymore and would fail the fire test that was used to qualify it for use. Unsealed openings are thus severe code violations because it is not just about that hole, the entire barrier can now no longer be counted upon, which destroys the design concept.
