This series consists of prisoners description books created by the New Zealand Police, which provide details of the physical description and criminal history of individuals sent to prison (i.e. sentenced to hard labour or penal servitude).

The books are made up of completed pre-printed forms (Police form 55A - revised December 1904) that are mostly carbon copies (a few forms are handwritten). As well as a photographic print of the prisoner, the information contained on the form includes:

Place where photograph was taken.
Native place.
Date of Birth [year].
Arrived in Colony -

Year.
Height (feet and inches).
Complexion.
Hair.
Eyes.
