  • English: The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) is a U.S. regulatory program for the control of water pollution. All point source facilities (e.g. factories, sewage treatmment plants, power plants) discharging to "waters of the United States" must obtain an NPDES permit from their state environmental agency or EPA, and comply with the pollution control and monitoring requirements in the permit. The NPDES program is authorized by the Clean Water Act. (See https://epa.gov/npdes.)
