English: The National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NRPA) is a 23.5 million acre (36,700 sq. mi. or 95,000 km²) area of the North Shore of Alaska, with large oil and natural gas resources, kept by the United States federal government as an emergency source of oil. It was established in 1923 as Naval Petroleum Reserve Number 4, and renamed in 1976 when it was transferred to the United States Department of the Interior.
