The Museum of Islay Life was founded in 1976 by the Islay Museums Trust, an arm of the Islay Historic Works Group and the Natural History and Antiquarian Society of Islay. The building they purchased for the museum had been constructed in 1843 as the Kilchoman congregational church of the Islay Presbytery or Preaching Station of the Free Church of Scotland founded in that year by separation from the Church of Scotland. The new Protestant church was to be governed by a General Assembly of the congregation, a platform similar to that of congregationalists elsewhere. The Kilchoman appellation came from Kilchoman Parish of the Church of Scotland. The latter had its own parish church, also in Port Charlotte.
