A mass dial is a sundial used for marking Christian ecclesiastical services. They were common in Europe from the Carolingian Renaissance to the Italian Renaissance and typically marked the canonical hours established by St Benedict for his monastic rule. They are also known as tide dials from the Old English word for "hour" and as scratch dials from their appearance.
