Lime Street tunnel was constructed between 1832 and 1836 by William McKenzie to connect the recently-constructed Edge Hill railway station and Liverpool Lime Street railway station. It is 2230 yards long and has a gradient of 1 in 93. Smoke and steam caused problems and in 1881 the tunnel was opened out and it now appears from above to be an open cutting crossed by road bridges.
