The Leeds Irish Elk was presented by philanthropist William Gott to Leeds Philosophical Society in 1862 for their museum in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It has been displayed in the city for over 150 years since then, and is now in Leeds City Museum. The skeleton was mounted in 2008 by the taxidermy conservator James Dickinson of Lancashire Conservation Studios, a department of Lancashire County Council.
The elk skeleton is complete and fully-articulated. It was found in County Limerick (where elk skeletons were then usually found on their backs in bogs) during or before 1847, and its accession number in Leeds Discovery Centre is Leedm.C.1847.11.8. (Source: Geoblitz)
