John Udny Italian sculptor (late 19th Century) [1]

Giorgio Giovanni (John) Udny was born in 1850, in Livorno Italy and died in Genoa, Italy in 1927. He is the eldest son of Roberto Udny and Enrichetta Achiardi.

The sculptor, John Udny, is a descendant of John Udny the British Vice Consul of Livorno, Italy who was born in Scotland about 1755 and died in Fiume, now Rejka Croatia in 1802.

John learn't his genius with marble from his uncle Giovanni who was a marble merchant. There are many other fine examples of his work in the famous Genoa cemetery (Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno).

Robert Burns statue in the city of Ballarat, Victoria[edit]

The Robbie Burns statue was erected by the Scottish community of Ballarat on the site of a large willow known as the 'Loafers' Tree'. Its donation was the first following the example of the Stoddart Statues and like them it was made of white Carrara marble. One of the same sculptors, Giovanni Udney in Italy, was sent a photograph of Burns and instructions for the design, from which he made the statue.
