John Charlton (1934–2006) was an avid amateur photographer in Greymouth, West Coast, New Zealand. He was often asked to take photographs of Greymouth by business owners, who supplied film and paid for some of the photo processing. Charlton worked various jobs in Greymouth, as a linotype printer at the Greymouth Evening Star, a storeman at Lane Walker Rudkin, at Grogan and Blackmore’s Cordial Factory, as a fish processor at Nelson Fisheries and Talley's, and as manager of Buchanan Enterprises, a venison, crayfish and fish processing business. Albums of his original photos and copies of historic images were donated to the Grey District Library after his death and released under an open licence.
