Robert Herdman travelled in Italy during his life, the travel started in 1855 where he made various watercolour reproductions of paintings of famous old masters in Italian galleries, he also painted some Italian subjects, he returned home some year later in 1858-59. During and after the travel (from 1855 until 1863) he painted some paintings about Italian life, the most successful was 'La culla' (The cradle, Study in Italy), exhibited in Edinburgh in 1857 and again exhibited there at the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition in 1859 (maybe only the watercolour study), and from 1863 the painting is located there.
