English: Isolation hospitals served as health care facilities used to isolate patients suffering from infectious diseases. Such hospitals were typically constructed with separation distances between the hospital and nearby populated areas, and were designed to segregate infected patients in a separate facility and to limit the spread of contagious diseases such as smallpox and cholera to the general population. Advances in health care and technology have resulted in improved infection control methods, and in developed countries the use of isolation units and other procedures has replaced isolation hospitals.
