Images in this category are suspected duplicates after a search for the VIRIN (the unique military identification number) has found other images matching this text. These are not identical duplicates, as there was no matching SHA-1 hash on upload (the way that identical files are compared), but are likely to either have been created due to duplicates on the source website(s) having different EXIF data for the same image, thereby changing the hash and filesize, or there being different pixel resolutions of the same image uploaded under the same VIRIN. Some matches may have occurred because the VIRIN is quoted in the image page text as a related image, rather than it referring to the image itself.

If these files are near identical duplicates, the images in this category may be the higher quality version, or have better image data that should be re-used. Deletion of duplicates will require a check of these attributes against suspected copies.

This is an on-going investigation to ensure these types of duplicates are avoided in future related uploads, and provisional analysis is available at User:Faebot/SandboxL.

Some VIRINs appear to be mistakenly applied to more than one image on the source website (http://www.defenseimagery.mil). For example "100511-A-HN532-002" is used to identify 3 very different images taken by the same photographer on the same day. Matches such as this will be shown in this category as suspected duplicates when they are not, or moved to Category:Images from DoD uploaded by Fæ (duplicate VIRIN) as a false duplicate.

"Source Websites" includes:

  1. http://www.defenseimagery.mil (a central DoD archive site where Fæ's uploads are from)
  2. http://www.marines.mil and various other specific military group sites within the DoD
  3. Flickr, such as http://www.flickr.com/photos/56594044@N06 "Official U.S. Navy Imagery"
  4. National Archives and Records Administration

Based on the analysis, of the original batch of c.14,000 files, 4.5% had these non-identical duplicate or non-unique VIRIN issues.
