Voorlopers van het huidige Maastricht Institute of Arts zijn: Stadsteekeninstituut (1898-1926), Middelbare Kunstnijverheidsschool (1926-1959), Stadsacademie voor Toegepaste Kunsten (1959-ca. 1990), Academie(s) Beeldende Kunsten (ca. 1990-2021). Tot omstreeks 1950 was de school gevestigd op Brusselsestraat 60 (een deel van de Sint-Servatiusschool en de Cellebroederskapel, beide bereikbaar via de Cellebroedersgang), vanaf circa 1950 op Brusselsestraat 77 (huis De Stuers), in de jaren 1950 uitgebreid met nieuwbouw op nr. 75. In 1970 werd het huidige hoofgebouw op het Herdenkingsplein in gebruik genomen.
