The Colours used by teams in rugby union and other sports during previous eras (on jerseys, emblems and flags, etc.) are of interest to readers of the history of the game.

To avoid confusion between colours used by current and former teams (for example, where clubs of a similar name may – or may not – be historically related) it is useful to have a separate sub-category for historical flag icons.

Sortkey[edit]

For historical flag icons of teams in nation-wide competitions or their relegation leagues, use a sortkey of CountryName. – e.g. for the image File:Marlborough Rugby Colours.png, with the colours of the former New Zealand provincial team Marlborough, use: [[Historical rugby union flag icons (squared)|New Zealand]]

To include a flag icon of the historical colours from a team that played within a particular state competition, use a sortkey of CountryName, StateCode. – e.g. for the image File:Gordon 1886.png, with the colours of the original Gordon club that played in New South Wales during the 1880s (and unrelated to the Gordon RFC that entered the Sydney premiership in 1936), use: [[Category:Historical rugby union flag icons (squared)|Australia, NSW]]

All simple flag images in this category could be re-created using vector graphics as SVG files. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.
